Journey towards Augmented Automation

Journey from step-by-step process automation to augmented automation

In last decade, it’s a fascinating journey from traditional process automation to the cutting-edge realm of augmented automation. Each step represents a significant leap in how businesses optimize their operations and leverage technologies. In my opinion below are the top 5 major milestones

  1. Business Process Management (BPM): BPM laid the foundation for automation. Organizations mapped out their processes, identified bottlenecks, and streamlined workflows. It was about efficiency, consistency, and reducing manual effort. BPM tools allowed businesses to automate repetitive tasks, enforce rules, and manage workflows. However, it was often rigid and lacked adaptability to dynamic business needs.
  2. Intelligent Automation: Intelligent automation emerged as a game-changer. It combined robotic process automation (RPA) with cognitive capabilities. RPA bots could mimic human actions, but now they could also understand unstructured data, learn from patterns, and make decisions. Machine learning (ML) algorithms enabled them to handle exceptions and adapt to changes. Intelligent automation blurred the line between human and machine, enhancing accuracy and scalability.
  3. Ethical Automation: As automation expanded, ethical considerations became paramount. Organizations realized that automation wasn’t just about efficiency; it impacted people’s lives. Ethical automation focused on transparency, fairness, and accountability. It addressed biases in algorithms, ensured privacy, and considered the social impact. Companies adopted guidelines and frameworks to build responsible automation systems.
  4. AI/ML Integration: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) became integral to automation. AI algorithms could predict outcomes, classify data, and optimize processes. ML models learned from historical data, improving decision-making. Chatbots, natural language processing (NLP), and recommendation engines transformed customer interactions. The synergy between automation and AI opened new possibilities.
  5. Augmented Intelligence: Augmented intelligence took automation to a higher plane. Instead of replacing humans, it amplified their capabilities. It combined AI’s analytical prowess with human intuition. Think of it as a collaborative partnership. Augmented intelligence systems provided insights, flagged anomalies, and suggested actions. They empowered knowledge workers, allowing them to focus on strategic thinking and creativity.

In summary, the journey from process automation to augmented automation reflects our evolution from rigid rule-based systems to adaptable, ethical, and symbiotic human-machine collaboration. As we embrace this transformation, we unlock unprecedented potential for innovation and growth.
