Automation is not just for large enterprises anymore (Read our article – RPA for SMBs). From freelancers and SMBs to early and growth stage startups, everyone is exploring multiple avenues of business process automation wherever they can.
In the recent past there has been mushroom growth for automation tools, most of which claimed to be No or Low code, Drag & Drop workflow creation, resulting in faster adoption.
Organizations of all sizes need to instill an automation mindset to make company-wide adoption a reality.
An automation first mindset depends as much on the organizational structure as it does on new beliefs. When the C-suite considers automation, they drive the vision and strategy of the company forward. Should that be the case?
Initial automation deployment starts for the sake of productivity benefit, but in an automation first organization, those goals will shift further toward the future. Improving operational efficiency and employee experience will become parallel goals.
The automation first mindset—with the right infrastructure, support, and organizational structure—will diffuse throughout your company. Once empowered and trained, citizen developers will be able to identify and automate tasks on their own.
An automation first mindset doesn’t prepare your organization for the future of work but enables you to lead your organization towards it.
“Automation is more than a business solution”
The full benefits of automation go beyond solving business problems. Thinking automation first enables you to think and act faster than your competitors, ensuring you can react to technology and business changes to develop new ways to serve your customers before others can.
An automation first mindset prioritizes the use of robots, but the ultimate goal is to better focus on the needs and unique capabilities of humans. The future of work will involve more changes than anyone can predict.
Here are few tips to make it happen based on my experience of working with an automation-first organization.
1. Implement Processes
Everyone has a preferred method or likes to follow a framework. It’s crucial to figure out what works best for your teams and implement a set process to handle tasks and situations.
This can be particularly risky when someone who is responsible to carry out an important task goes through a personal setback and is unable to think clearly and make the right choices. Therefore, it’s imperative to have a set process to not only carry out a task but also to handle a crisis.
Processes not only help avert disaster but also make on-boarding new team members a lot easier. Moreover, with processes in place, task automation becomes frictionless.
2. Document … Document …. Document
Create and develop habit of documentation. Either way, with a rise in distributed and remote teams, documenting processes is core to ensuring that processes are understood and followed. In the absence of proper documentation, a process ends up becoming a guideline that is often interpreted in ways more than one, causing inefficiencies and becoming counterproductive.
To instill an automation mindset, it is imperative to document processes by breaking each task or situation down to triggers, actions and outcomes. Let’s take a look at what each of them entails.
3. Invest in tools
Once the processes are documented using the methodology mentioned above, it is a breeze to create process maps and identify steps that can be automated. Tools play an important role hereon.
